Weekend 1 - Culture, Design and Principles

To do: Observation

We highly recommend you find a sit spot for yourself - a spot where you go back to regularly to observe nature. A sit spot allows you to become familiar with a place, and the place to become familiar with you. Explore your own ways of coming into your body, using multiple ways of ‘seeing’ and ‘sensing’ and ‘knowing’ while you do this and see if you can include more of yourself and more of your surroundings as you go.

Regardless of whether you do this in a sit spot or not, take some time over the next weeks to explore some of Starhawk’s 9 ways of observing. Also chose one or two of the Holmgren Principles and explore: where can you see this principle in nature and where might it be useful as a designer.

To do: ‘In our hands’ - a film by Black Bark Films and the Landworkers Alliance

We recommend you watch the documentary ‘In our hands’. The full film is available for free on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/331020608

“All change begins with a story and In Our Hands is the story of the farmers who, through hope, hard-graft and sheer bloody mindedness are refusing to be victims of history. This one hour documentary takes you on a journey across the fields of Britain, past the orchards of forgotten fruit and through the fields of ancient grains. The film reveals both the wisdom of the old and the innovations of the young, who are bringing back the worm to the soil, the ‘culture’ to ‘agriculture,’ and the flavour to the tomato! We stand on a brink, the swallows are departing, but the future of this land is still In Our Hands.”
